gas mask

When we were girls, first we would sniff, then our top lip hugged our nostrils in an attempt to minimize inhalation. Finally, we’d squint our eyes and turn our heads with suspicion to determine who “let one go” lol. We called that a “SBD” or Silent But(t) Deadly. lol Well there is a sin that is just as subtle and just as stinky, it is the SBD sin of Pride.

 Paul warns,

For I say to every man that is among you, through the grace given unto me, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.__ Romans 12:3KJV

And the writer of Proverbs shares the wisdom of God with:

The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. __Proverbs 16:5 NIV.

Pride often goes undiagnosed because its origin can be a very private matter.

The Pharisees paraded the woman caught in the act of adultery (as told in John 8:1-11) before Jesus because adultery is an observable and a physical sin. But the Pharisees themselves, permeated with the stench of religious pride.

And like three young girls of yesteryear, we want to know what is the source of the stink. lol

The root of pride can be:

  1. lack of confidence or insecurity.
As disciples of Jesus, we know that our confidence is in our relationship with God. The awesome care that God demonstrated in providing for us is enough to make the least of us stand up straight. Read about how much He loves us in John 3:16

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Philipians 1:6 KJV

  1. self-centeredness and selfishness. To live from a “me-first” perspective is to live in petri dish for pride production. False motives and manipulation only feed the selfish nature of pride.

In the days of ole when a SBD meant that some noxious gaseous material had disturbed our pleasant atmosphere we would fan it away or spray a sweet smelling fragrance. But today, when I find myself falling among the obnoxiousness of pride, I just open a window of prayer to Our Loving Father to ask for His gracious help to rid this from my personality

And to you, I say   do likewise   or. . . For Goodness sake! Light a candle! lol
