I recall an episode of an 80’s sitcom where the blond haired, clueless daughter character crammed for an important test at school. Surprisingly, she was able to retain the required information. The kicker was that with each new fact she learned, she lost some bit of data that she already knew. She had a limited capacity to retain information. At the end of the episode, with her brain being fully saturated, she no longer remembered her name. lol That was a funny plot for a 30 minute episode of escapist absurdity, but not so for the Christian walk.
Paul said in his letter to Timothy,
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women (and men) laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.__ 2 Timothy 3:1-7KJV (annotated)
This morning, I won’t take in one more devotional, nugget, or inspirational thought until I can ascertain if I have done the last thing that God told me to do. I am determined to throw off the label of being “educated beyond my obedience.”
Let it not be said of me (or you) that we have ” a form of godliness but denying the power thereof.” What does that look like?
Yes , I know that the Bible says that I can do all things with Christ who strengthens me (Philipians 4:13), but this or that is TOO HARD! This is how we deny the power of God who wills us to do His will. (Philipians 2:13)
What about verse 7?: “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Being full of facts, Bible knowledge but living an unchanged life. A Christian who lives in a manner that is so similar to an unbeliever that he or she has to announce their faith. As one minister said of some Christians, “They (we) don’t let the Word of God stand in the way of what we want to do.”
As Christians, we are call to eternal life—- EVER-LIVING—–not ever-learning. We know the Truth and the Truth has made us free! It’s time to walk it out.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.__Philipians 4:13 KJV
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. __Philipians 2:13 KJV
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.__John 8:32 KJV
